Overview
For four years, I served as the Lead Designer on Total Control (TCX) for United Rentals—the largest equipment rental company in the world. TCX is their flagship platform used by enterprise clients to track rental fleets, manage owned equipment, and run active jobsites. The legacy system was plagued by cumbersome navigation and dense interfaces that slowed down field personnel when making critical decisions.
Starting with an initial prototype to secure executive buy-in, I led the overhaul of TCX from concept to execution. My focus was solving enterprise-level UX challenges to improve task speed and data clarity without sacrificing core functionality. Through strong cross-functional alignment, I helped transform TCX into a streamlined, high-performance platform that drove jobsite efficiency and elevated the customer experience.
Rethinking A Legacy Architecture
TCX’s complex navigation was restructured from the ground up to establish a predictable hierarchy. Fragmented features were consolidated into intuitive workstreams with standardized design patterns, delivering consistent interactions across every module and drastically reducing time spent searching for critical fleet data.
Streamlining Data Dense Workflows
A cleaner UI hierarchy was introduced across tables, dashboards, and reporting views to simplify massive datasets. High-frequency actions, such as off-renting equipment, approving invoices, and scheduling service, were prioritized to accelerate operational speed without stripping away advanced power-user functionality.
RETHINKING A LEGACY ARCHITECTURE
Defining the UX direction and validated frameworks upfront established a clear path for production teams. This approach transformed cross-functional collaboration between VML and United Rentals. New workflows bridged operational gaps by embedding Business Analysts early in discovery, establishing structured design reviews, and introducing UX QA checkpoints to guarantee high-fidelity execution.
