Overview

The Total Control Dashboard project transformed a static display into a flexible workspace where enterprise users can build customized dashboards scoped to their operational needs. By introducing visual data cards, custom layouts, and deep-dive analytics, the updated experience delivers real-time visibility into key fleet and jobsite metrics.

FLEXIBLE CARD ARCHITECTURE & DATA VISUALIZATION

To give users complete control over how data is displayed, a modular card system was established across four distinct visualization types: Summary, Trending, Data Visual, and Comparison. Cards were organized into high-level platform categories, enabling intuitive browsing, configuration, and layout customization. This design pattern ensured seamless visual and functional alignment across all TCX modules.

The Process

The project began with whiteboard sketches and high-fidelity layout concepts built on the existing design system. Working closely with development team, end-to-end user flows for dashboard setup and card configuration were mapped against live API capabilities to establish a slimmed down, executable MVP.

MVP Launch

The MVP successfully launched following close development collaboration that delivered new API endpoints and data tables. Future roadmap updates include multiple dashboard views, semi custom widget tailoring, and drag and drop widget reorganization.

Ideal State Key Features

Multiple Dashboard Views

Users build and switch between saved dashboards scoped by Jobsites, POs, Accounting Codes, and or Contacts, using top-level quick filters for instant refinement.

Semi-customizabe Dashboard Widgets

Users can add and tailor individual widgets based on the specific operational parameters they care about most, including setting custom timeframes, selecting data display metrics, etc.

Actionable Drill-Downs

Clicking any card opens a contextual side panel with detailed data, related metrics, and direct action links without navigating away from the dashboard.

Drag-and-Drop Customization

Leveraged the Kendo native grid framework to give users smooth drag-and-drop capability, allowing them to effortlessly add, remove, and reorganize dashboard cards into a custom grid layout.

Cross-Platform Integration

Standardized cards can be pinned directly to the top of TCX Grid views to maintain uniform data visualization across the platform.

STRATEGIC MVP SCOPING & WORKFLOW DESIGN

End-to-end user flows were crafted for creating multiple dashboards and configuring individual cards. Starting with a high-fidelity ideal vision, the experience was systematically scaled back in collaboration with product and engineering to establish a lean, impactful MVP. This approach eliminated friction in the setup process, reduced technical complexity, and accelerated time-to-market.

TECHNICAL ALIGNMENT & API ADVOCACY

Delivering actionable metrics required tight coordination with development to evaluate backend infrastructure. Where data limits existed, design advocated for new API endpoints and data structures to power essential card types. Establishing early alignment allowed engineering to build necessary data tables in parallel with design production, leading directly to a successful MVP launch.
