Overview
The TCX Reports project updated the report creation workflow within United Rentals’ Total Control platform. The legacy setup suffered from cumbersome filtering, forced annual expirations, rigid column reordering, and an unorganized template list. The redesign focused on simplifying report setup, improving schedule management, and preventing communication drop-offs for field operations and administrators.
Project Goals
Replace Static Data
Role-Specific Customization
Multi-Dashboard Support
Cross-Module Integration
Evolve rigid, uniform displays into a flexible, visual, and highly interactive framework.
Allow users to build tailored workspaces focused on their primary operational priorities.
Enable users to create, save, and switch between multiple dashboard views.
Align data cards with existing TCX modules to ensure seamless platform consistency.
Project Goals
Quick Selection Templates
Help users quickly identify and launch common reports without scrolling through a long list.
Prevent Silent Expirations
Provide an option for reports to run indefinitely so users do not miss critical operational updates on extended projects.
Improve Delivery Control
Add pause capabilities to manage inbox clutter for future or to run one-off reports.
Refine Column Customization
Make column reordering straightforward for more control over final data exports.
FLEXIBLE CARD ARCHITECTURE & DATA VISUALIZATION
To give users complete control over how data is displayed, a modular card system was established across four distinct visualization types: Summary, Trending, Data Visual, and Comparison. Cards were organized into high-level platform categories, enabling intuitive browsing, configuration, and layout customization. This design pattern ensured seamless visual and functional alignment across all TCX modules.

Key Features
Popular Templates
Promoted the most frequently used report templates to the top of the page for quick creation, while keeping the complete library accessible for specific operational needs.
On/Off Controls
Added a toggle to pause report delivery, allowing users to keep configured setups saved for future or occasional use without receiving unnecessary emails.

No Expiration Option
Introduced a setting allowing reports to run without an expiration date, eliminating unexpected stops in communication on long-term jobsites.
Customizable Columns
Streamlined the export setup by allowing users to easily include, exclude, and reorder data columns via drag-and-drop.
MVP Launch
The updated report builder launched as part of a core TCX platform update, supported by updated Help Center documentation. The release reduced report configuration errors, eliminated unexpected expirations, and gave users direct control over their scheduled data delivery.

STRATEGIC MVP SCOPING & WORKFLOW DESIGN
End-to-end user flows were crafted for creating multiple dashboards and configuring individual cards. Starting with a high-fidelity ideal vision, the experience was systematically scaled back in collaboration with product and engineering to establish a lean, impactful MVP. This approach eliminated friction in the setup process, reduced technical complexity, and accelerated time-to-market.
TECHNICAL ALIGNMENT & API ADVOCACY
Delivering actionable metrics required tight coordination with development to evaluate backend infrastructure. Where data limits existed, design advocated for new API endpoints and data structures to power essential card types. Establishing early alignment allowed engineering to build necessary data tables in parallel with design production, leading directly to a successful MVP launch.
